World Premiere of the musical TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN Comedy Theatre, London's West End, 2009
TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN is a dramatic new musical which is based on a fictional account of the last 48 hours in the life of the eminent American writer, Ernest Hemingway.
An acclaimed author, battling the rigours of old age and desperately trying to live up to his own legend, takes solace in the company of his young secretary, Louella. His wife, Mary, tolerates this liaison so as not to lose him, and is perfectly aware that the secretary has a secret agenda – to become wife number five and inherit his estate. The arrival of an old school friend, Rex, a Hollywood B-movie producer and New York city slicker, adds a further complication, as he tries to secure the film rights to the life of the notorious writer. With bribery, lies and manipulation, Rex plays a dangerous game to achieve his goal. Can there be any winners in this tangled web of emotional conflict? Hemingway is like Icarus in Greek mythology who, in attempting to fly with wax-covered wings, ignored all warnings and flew too close to the sun.
Roberto Trippini wrote the libretto and co-wrote the lyrics. For music and more photos, click here. THE SHOW CD A CD of the songs is now available. This can be bought :- Direct from GBM (e-mail gbm@bidlaketoft.com) or online from Dress Circle.
