The World Premiere of

TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN

TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN is a dramatic new musical which is based on a fictional account of the last year in the life of the eminent American writer, Ernest Hemingway. This musical has its World Premiere in London's West End this summer, opening at the COMEDY THEATRE on Thursday 16th July for a strictly limited eight-week season. Press night: Friday 24th July 2009.

An acclaimed author, battling the rigours of old age and desperately trying to live up to his own legend, takes solace in the company of his young secretary, Louella. His wife, Mary, tolerates this liaison so as not to lose him, and is perfectly aware that the secretary has a secret agenda to become wife number five and inherit his estate.
The arrival of an old school friend, Rex, a Hollywood B-movie producer and New York city slicker, adds a further complication, as he tries to secure the film rights to the life of the notorious writer. With bribery, lies and manipulation, Rex plays a dangerous game to achieve his goal.
Can there be any winners in this tangled web of emotional conflict? Hemingway is like Icarus in Greek mythology who, in attempting to fly with wax-covered wings, ignored all warnings and flew too close to the sun.

09/03/2009 00:00:00 The bringing together of Roberto Trippini and the composer, John Robinson, for the new production of "Behind the Iron Mask", was very successful. The two writers have now collaborated on a new musical, "Too Close to the Sun". This is a fictitious account of what might have been Ernest Hemingway's last challenge. Hemingway cheated death whilst making the most of life. He was a big-game hunter, war correspondent, Nobel Prize-Winner, and all-round adventurer, but his love life was a mess and his fame won him false friends. A concept CD of some of the songs has been recorded.
09/03/2009 00:00:00 Since the West End premiere of GBM's musical "Behind the Iron Mask" (2005), new developments have taken place. A completely new libretto has been written by a new writer, Roberto Trippini. This has resulted in more music and songs being composed, although eighty percent of the original score has been retained. In October 2007, a ninety-minute showcase of the new production was performed in New York at New World Stages. The orchestrations for the new songs and music are currently being written. These will then be recorded. Plans are now being discussed for the new production of "Behind the Iron Mask".
